... Otherwise known as the Academy Awards. Oh man, there's nothing that gets me pumped up quite like Oscar night -- the stars, the surprises, the gowns and the gushing.
I don't like to do predictions -- feels too much like betting against your team, plus I don't really get much from the bragging rights (I mean, everyone and their mail carrier has their picks!). But I do know who I want to win.
I'm definitely on Team Brokeback. Loved this movie. People keep asking me what I liked about it. I have a hard time pinpointing exactly what -- all I know is that it really drew me in and moved me, and at the end I was weepy mess. Actually, it was after the end. Once the credits began rolling and Willie Nelson started singing "He Was a Friend of Mine," I pretty much lost it. It was kind of embarrassing. I'm getting a little verkempt just thinking about it! What can I say, I'm a sucker for the Big Love story. Also happy for "Munich" and have a soft spot for "Capote."
POST-CEREMONY UPDATE: Well, boo. I thought "Crash" was a good, important movie, but I wasn't totally convinced it should have been nominated, frankly. Wanted to see "The Squid and the Whale" up there instead. I was alarmed at how upset I was that "Brokeback Mountain" didn't win, actually. Sorry to belabor the sports metaphor, but it felt as though the team I'd been loyal to all season lost the championship game. Wah. Happy for Ang Lee, and Jon Stewart was great, but overall I just feel kind of down about the whole thing. May not even have the desire to watch all the preshow arrivals coverage that I Tivo'd. That's saying a lot!
And now, other movies that moved and entertained me in 2005. (Winners of the Angie? The Wuzie? Enh, whatever.) There are probably tons more, but these are the ones I could remember or find stubs for:
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
The Aristocrats
Batman Begins
Born Into Brothels (2004)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Crash
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Hustle & Flow
King Kong
Millions (2004)
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Murderball
Pride and Prejudice
Serenity
Sin City
The Squid and the Whale
Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith
Transamerica
Walk the Line
Wallace & Grommit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Wedding Crashers
What did I leave out?
