Hiked today with some pals at Sugarloaf Mountain in Frederick County, Md. It was foliage galore! And my dad would have approved of the photography-friendly clear, blue sky. The views were gorgeous, and it was so great to get out of the city and into some nature. Only an hour away from D.C.!

My woodland friends: Kendra, who makes a mean trail mix. Nathan, our able/angry driver. And Andy, who literally took us off the beaten path for a much more vertical, rocky, fun climb to the top. I'm not sure what they're laughing at here. I'm guessing it's something I said that was hilarious.

Can I live here? Technically, Sugarloaf (elevation: 1,282 feet) is a monadnock, "a mountain that remains after the erosion of the surrounding land," its official Web site says. Having lived in flat-ass Indiana and Texas, I'm not gonna quibble with the details. It's a mountain! (That's for you, Kendra!)

The finest sonofabitch I ever knew.

The reverse view from above. Darn you, unruly hair wisps!

The gang's all here, at our sun-dappled best:
Gotta love the camera timer!

Those colors are fantastic. Weather here is finally turning cool. I mean, there's nothing like November at 80 friggin degrees!
