Going Batty

I've been telling everyone I know to go see "Batman Begins." It's fantastic! I've never been that much of a Batman geek, but this flick just may turn me into one. And I can't help comparing it with the other iconic movie of the summer, "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith." Gosh, that's a long title to type.

Think about it: Both tell the story of how a masked icon came to be. Dark Knight vs. Dark Side! And the similarity, for me, underscored how good "Batman Begins" is and how good "Revenge of the Sith" could have been.

I've definitely been more of a Star Wars fan over the years. And, like everyone else, I was disappointed in Episodes I and II and thought III was much better. In fact, at the end of "Revenge of the Sith," I was on a total movie high, so excited about all the references to the original "Star Wars" we know and love. But I still couldn't help feeling regret that most of the movie was filled with cringe-inducing dialogue and "comic relief" that often felt forced or out of place.

I think that's why I'm so over-the-edge enthusastic about "Batman Begins." It was so not a letdown in every way. (I'm choosing to ignore Katie Holmes.) And it made me think, why, oh why couldn't George Lucas have hired someone to write his dialogue?

Also, Christian Bale: Definitely hotter than Hayden Christensen. But I'd have to go with Darth Vader in a matchup with Batman. Ya know, the force and all.

Hi I was linked here by another blog. I'm a copy editor in Florida. :-)

I agree it was hokey, but it's a Star Wars tradition to be completely grandiose and yet not take itself seriously at the same time. (That's why each movie contains the groaner like "I've got a bad feeling about this.") Somehow I think Lucas wants the dialogue to be intentionally bad. He's weird. But anyway I liked SW3, but more for the closure than quality. My fav summer movie so far is War of the Worlds (but that's because I get to see my hometown of Bayonne, NJ get blown up). Haven't seen Batman yet, it's on my list. :-)
